A woven lounge can bring softness, texture and a relaxed sense of luxury to a terrace or poolside setting. But is wicker weatherproof? The answer depends almost entirely on what the wicker is made from and how the furniture beneath it has been constructed.
Wicker describes a method of weaving rather than one specific material. Natural rattan and cane behave very differently outdoors from purpose-made synthetic wicker. In Australia, where furniture may face intense UV, heavy rain, coastal salt and large temperature changes, that distinction matters enormously.
Is wicker actually weatherproof?
Natural wicker is not suitable for prolonged exposure to Australian weather. Materials such as rattan, cane and willow absorb moisture and can dry, move, become brittle or develop mould when regularly exposed outdoors.
Premium synthetic wicker is different. It is manufactured specifically to cope with UV and moisture and can remain outdoors through normal weather when paired with an appropriate frame and cushion construction.

That construction is hidden once weaving and cushions are in place, which is exactly why it is worth asking about. When comparing wicker furniture, look beneath the seat and around the underside of the frame. Clean welding, consistent construction and well-finished weave endings are often more useful indicators of quality than the showroom silhouette.
What about rain and cushions?
The wicker itself may handle rain well, but the upholstery still needs to be designed for the same environment. Osier Belle uses solution-dyed acrylic outdoor fabrics and Urecel QuickDry Foam, allowing water to drain through the cushion and air to circulate following wet weather.
That makes a substantial difference from conventional foam enclosed within a water-resistant cover. Removable cushion covers also make ongoing cleaning more practical.
During extended periods of rain, however, allowing cushions to dry thoroughly or moving them into ventilated storage will always help preserve their appearance.
How does wicker perform in different Australian climates?
Coastal settings
- Synthetic wicker itself is an excellent option near the coast, but salt should not be allowed to build up indefinitely.
- Rinse furniture periodically with fresh water and pay attention to the frame, feet and areas where salt can collect beneath cushions.

Hot, exposed spaces

Rinse gently and allow it to dry. Avoid aggressive pressure washing or abrasive cleaners that can damage either the fibre or the powder-coated frame beneath it.
Around pools and coastal environments, more regular rinsing may be useful simply because sunscreen, chlorine and salt accumulate faster.
